Artist Talk: Teresa Lyle
Belfast Exposed High Street
3rd April - 1pm
4th April - 1pm
Teresa Lyle will discuss her current exhibition, 'Reflection of Truth', as well as her own practice and how photography has impacted on her mental health.
Teresa is a photographer from Northern Ireland. Her work focuses on mental illness exploring recovery and relapse. After being diagnosed with Dysthymia - a long lasting form of depression. Teresa has set out to highlight the disorder that is rarely heard of, and shine a light on the difficulties she endures.
Inspired by automatism - the mind is freed from the conscious making of the image. Suffering from Dysthymia– persistent depressive disorder the work enables the artist to depict a world they have experienced when their control on reality and life become lost. In life are perception of reality is skewed and even more so in heightened periods of depression and anxiety. Using photography and new technologies the work depicts the struggles experienced as-well as developing self-revelations through symbolic interpretations. The final portraits surprise the viewer through dreamlike imagery that challenge our expectations and tropes.

Artist Talk: Clare Lyons
Catalyst Arts
3rd April - 1pm
4th April - 1pm

Clare Lyons (b.1993) is a visual artist and photographer working between Dublin and Belfast. She holds an MFA in Photography from the Belfast School of Art.
Clare’s practice finds its concern in the tactile nature of the photographic image. Emphasising the materiality of the photograph, she explores themes of memory, trauma and her personal struggles with mental illness. Considering the photograph as an object is integral to Clare's practice, and she has strived to develop methodologies which seek to draw attention to this through crafting, experimental printmaking, and working with an alternative approach to photographs. Often, for Clare, the image is not "enough" and additional interventions must be made with, to, or upon the surface of the image to tease out the difficult topics explored in her work. Clare’s practice tracks an autobiographical narrative where the artist has built a visual language to express the inexpressible. She is motivated by the hope to achieve catharsis through creating and making, and also to encourage a more healthy conversation surrounding the deeply personal themes which arise in her work.
Clare will discuss her current exhibition as well as her own practice and how photography has impacted on her mental health.
Please note that this is not an exhibition but a small showcase of Clare Lyon’s work along with a conversation about her practice.
