Pick'n'Mix Workshops

On both days of the conference there will be choice of

workshops for you to chose from and attend.

Workshops will cover a variety of topics within therapeutic photography.

Savannah Dodd is the founder of the Photography Ethics Centre, which since 2017 has promoted ethical literacy in the global photographic industry. Given how extraordinarily powerful photography can be as a tool for change, to tell stories and promote ideas, it is vital that photographers are aware of the ethical responsibilities that come with this power. Join Savannah at Belfast Exposed High Street, as she discusses the ethical dilemmas associated with photographing the subject of mental health and how these can be approached.

COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH

Morwenna Kearsley is a Glasgow-based artist working with photography, text and moving image. Her work is socially engaged and involves documenting objects that reveal part of who we are, as individuals and communities. She often collaborates with other artists and non-artists via workshops, evening classes and community arts projects. Join her for one of a number of sessions at Belfast Exposed during the Conference, where she discusses her work in Glasgow's Govanhill neighbourhood, and how photography & mental health interact in a community setting.

The workshop will look at how therapeutic photography works as a method of engagement to increase self-knowledge, investigate coping strategies and through sharing, learning from peer-to-peer support. The workshop will highlight methodology, case studies with people with lived experiences of poor mental health and how the use of photography can assist in how we frame our world.

The workshop will look at how Belfast Exposed support and empower young people using photography to assist personal development, mental health and wellbeing, skills training and career development opportunities through participation in a variety of programmes designed for children, teenagers and young adults.

The Walking Studio: Capturing and Preserving

From Ulster University and CHOICE (Challenging Health Outcomes/ integrating Care Environments) comes a unique experience and opportunity to explore the geography of the Cathedral Quarter, with The Walking Studio: Capturing and Preserving, an opportunity to become a wayfarer along the streets and entries (alleyways) near Belfast Exposed.

Each participant will capture their experiences through photographs that respond to the word healing, within the context of urban spaces requiring care and restoration. Participants will also record the sounds and list the words that document their routes of discovery. The goal of the walking studio is to observe what is all around and find a place within. 

Participants will need a fully charged mobile phone for photography and the recording of soundscapes, and a notebook and pen/pencil to record a list of words that associate to places and photos. The workshop is wheelchair accessible.

What to wear:

Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and outdoor clothing.

Participants should bring a fully charged mobile phone for photography and the recording of soundscapes. A notebook and pencil/pen for writing down a list of words that associate to places and photos.

Workshop: Ekaterina Solomatina

Ekaterina Solomatina is a Belfast-based fine artist who explores the potential of video art and installation. Ekaterina combines digital and physical employing film-making skills, digital graphics, sculpture and sound design developing most profound ways to reach her audience. Ekaterina is currently in receipt of Flax Emerging Artists Residency and is on a committee which curates the exhibiting space called FASE on North street 7, Belfast.  She is a co-director of Platform Arts.
